Although Watterson appears to admire animation, he liked to remain in complete control -- doing all the work himself -- of his invention, and he would lose that were he to let animators work on it. But I've read that the critical obstacle was the difficulty of animation's handling the central gimmick of the strip -- that Hobbes is alive to Calvin, a plush animal to everyone else. For example, how would one handle Hobbes's voice? From one point of view, Hobbes's voice should just be Calvin's, since Hobbes's words are created by Calvin -- at least, that's one way of looking at it. But, of course, you couldn't do that in a cartoon. Thus, one couldn't just "animate the strip"; animators would end up making something rather different. It might be good, but I think Watterson decided that if others were going to make something different, they should make something completely different, and not base it on his creation. It's John Heebink's art and he is temporary on Judge Parker and will be done with it on March 14th. Manley starts on JP on March 14th. That is not Mike Manley’s work. I do NOT like the new artist's drawing. The characters don't even remotely resemble Barreto's figures. I think I'll skip that strip until either Mr. Barreto gets well or you find someone who can draw reasonably close to his renderings. Sending prayers for Mr. Barreto to get well quickly. The work you posted from 2/19/2010 above is by the "temporary artist", John Heebink. Heebink is filling in again for Barreto until the new artist, Mike Manley takes over on March 15th. The Washington Post has the full story, with some background on why it has come to this: http://voices.washingtonpost.com/comic-riffs/2010/02/this_just_in_judge_parker_name.html NO, NO, NO. Comment on Stupid Criminals – Stupid Superheroes by JimTheJam http://www.comicstriparchive.com/spider-man/stupid-criminals-stupid-superheroes/comment-page-1#comment-3263 JimTheJam Wed, 27 Jan 2010 19:24:56 +0000 http://www.comicstriparchive.com/?p=128#comment-3263 While the cops are being stupid, Spiderman is just confident, if you read the strip, he had reason to be. He got there it time to stop the crooks -- BUT the sandman then defeated him. But if Spiderman was there quicker, no difference. In addition, they had to drop the loot, so Spiderman was not stupid, just confident -- and in need of cash (which was the pupose of the pictures). The shooting of the cheating online crooked gambler: it *is* a *joke*. Of COURSE the details that you describe don't make sense, that is the JOKE. Stupidest comment ever! (Well no, but must be in the top 100). And the Luann comic may be creepy to you, but it makes sense to me and is not particularly creepy. I think you have a rather strange sense of what creepy (or non-creepy) is, besides missing humor (Online Poker), and no sense of what is stupid or not. OK, the cops are stupid, but they are not criminals, nor superheroes. So where are the stupid criminals and stupid superheroes. Not shown. SCORE: 0 for 3. Go Team!!
